Our Favorite Christmas Cookies

Rum Logs

1 c. butter
2 t. vanilla
2 t. rum flavoring
3/4 c. sugar
1 egg unbeaten
3 cups flour
1 t. nutmeg

Cream first three ingredients together. Add sugar. Blend in eggs. Add flour and nutmeg gradually. Roll into logs as thick as pointer finger and cut into two-three inch long logs. Place on ungreased cookie sheet. Bake for 12-15 min. at 350 degrees. Let the cookies cool before frosting.

Rum Log Frosting

3 T. butter
1 t. rum flavoring
2 1/2 c. confection sugar
2-3 T. milk

  2. I use this rum log recipe…I’ve already made 2 batches this month but I experimented with the frosting and decided to use a butter cream frosting that I usually use for cakes. I just altered it a bit to add rum flavoring in it. Love these cookes!! (Except my youngest can’t have them! He is allergic to red 40 and can you believe red 40 is in rum flavoring?? Like I care what color it is?! Once you bake with it, the color prior to baking is irrelevant!) Anyone know of any rum flavorings that don’t have red 40???

  3. At our house we call them, “nutmeg logs” because we sprinkle the frosting with nutmeg. It was my mom’s recipe, and we quadruple batches around here! A sense of panic ensues if the kids don’t think mom has made enough for the holidays. Thanks for sharing and God bless the Sinclair clan!
